Celebrating Independence Day in style

Honoring the terno’s tradition in the contemporary landscape of Filipino fashion, the Ternocon KKK unifies the islands of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao into an archipelagic exhibition of pieces by designers Jesus ‘Jojie’ Lloren, Cary Santiago, and Jaggy Glarino at the Museo Del Galeón of SM Mall of Asia. Today, June 12, 2024, Filipinos are commemorating the country’s independence and honoring the heroes who fought for this freedom. This national holiday holds significant historical and cultural importance, serving as an opportunity to exhibit national pride, cultural heritage, and the enduring spirit of the Filipino people.

Individuals celebrating this occasion with style and incorporating the modern attributes that define the Philippines today can express the contemporary identity of the nation while acknowledging its rich heritage.

At the Museo del Galeón of SM Mall of Asia on June 10, a distinguished event titled “TernoCon: Kasarinlan, Kultura, Kasuotan” successfully merged tradition with modern sophistication. This exceptional collaboration between SM Supermalls, Bench/lifestyle + clothing, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) was curated by the visionary talents of Jojie Lloren, Cary Santiago, and Jaggy Glarino.

The “TernoCon: Kasarinlan, Kultura, Kasuotan” fashion show redefined cultural celebrations in the Philippines, illustrating the intersection of fashion, history, and identity, and offering a fresh perspective on Filipino artistry.

Renowned designer Jesus “Jojie” Lloren, recognized for his minimalist design and expert tailoring, presented “A Lullaby For My Mother,” a collection of 12 exquisitely crafted ternos.

This collection pays homage to both his mother and the nation, reflecting Lloren’s commitment to preserving and elevating Filipino culture through fashion. His designs incorporate traditional Filipino elements with a modern twist, showcasing timeless elegance and sophistication.

Cary Santiago, known for his intricate and sculptural designs, unveiled “Ikonograpiya,” a vibrant collection inspired by the Philippine flag and iconic national symbols. His 12 elaborately detailed ternos symbolize a vivid celebration of Filipino pride, embodying the essence of the nation’s identity. Santiago’s designs skillfully integrate traditional aesthetics with contemporary flair, expressing a harmonious blend of cultural heritage and modernity.

Meanwhile, Jaggy Glarino, acclaimed for his avant-garde and non-conformist approach, showcased “Lemlunay,” a collection that draws inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of Mindanao. Featuring nine ternos and three barongs, Glarino’s creations beautifully merge the past and present, demonstrating his ability to infuse traditional motifs with contemporary elements. His designs reflect the rich tapestry of Mindanao’s traditions, highlighting the region’s vibrant cultural identity while incorporating innovative design concepts.

The “TernoCon: Kasarinlan, Kultura, Kasuotan” fashion show presented 36 captivating looks, with an exhibition of 24 ensembles at the Main Atrium of SM Mall of Asia from June 11 to June 23.
